Cutting Polybutylene Pipe

1. Cut

Use a professional pipe cutter to cut the pipe squarely at the 'K' mark.

Inserting In-Cert Stiffener

2. Insert Stiffener

Place the In-Cert® pipe stiffener into the cut end of the pipe.

Push and Twist Insertion

3. Push

Push the pipe firmly into the fitting socket, fully through the internal sealing components until it reaches the pipe stop at the bottom of the socket.

Haptic Click Confirmation

4. Haptic Click

Confirm the pipe is fully inserted and the joint is secure, by twisting the pipe to feel and hear the "Haptic Click".

Can you use PolyPlumb® Enhanced fittings with copper pipe? +
Yes, PolyPlumb® Enhanced is fully compatible with copper. For a sound joint, ensure the copper is cut with a rotary cutter and deburred, never use a hacksaw. You will need to mark the insertion depth on the pipe as below. No stiffener is required for copper pipe therefore you won’t get the benefit of the In-Cert® insertion recognition technology and feel the haptic click.

Is PolyPlumb® Enhanced a permanent fitting? +
Yes. PolyPlumb® Enhanced is a permanent, non-releasable fitting designed for maximum security in first-fix plumbing. Once the joint is made, it can only be demounted by disassembly, making it the ideal choice for permanent installations in floor and behind-the-wall applications where joint integrity is critical.

We choose Polybutylene (PB) to create the most flexible and efficient pipes and jointing systems available. Polybutylene pipe is ideal for both domestic hot and cold-water plumbing and heating systems, offering exceptional durability and long-term performance. The most important characteristic of polybutylene is its natural flexibility, allowing you to bend the pipe into even the tightest of spaces. Polybutylene is the most malleable plastic used in the manufacture of piping systems ensuring a lightweight and easy to handle pipe with good cabling ability for fast and easy installation. Polybutylene is also inert to scale build up in hard water areas.
What is Barrier Pipe and why is it used? +
A barrier pipe is a specialised plumbing pipe featuring an internal oxygen barrier layer that is designed to prevent oxygen from entering the heating system, reducing the risk of corrosion in metal components, such as radiators etc.
What is the difference between grey and white PolyPlumb® Enhanced fittings? +
Aside from the colour, there is no difference in performance or specification. Both grey and white PolyPlumb® Enhanced fittings are manufactured to the same tolerances, dimensions, standards and include the same 50-year guarantee for plumbing and heating applications.

Note: If required grey pipe and white fittings can be used together and vice versa.

What is the standard pressure test protocol for PolyPlumb® Enhanced systems? +
To ensure a secure installation, fill the system with water at ambient temperature and ensure all air is expelled. The pressure testing protocol is a two stage process:
  1. Low Pressure Test: Apply 1 bar of pressure for 30 minutes and inspect for leaks.
  2. High Pressure Test: Apply 18 bar of pressure for 30 minutes and inspect for leaks.

Can you reuse PolyPlumb® Enhanced fittings and how do you demount them? +
PolyPlumb® Enhanced is a permanent fitting, demountable by disassembly only. If a fitting needs to be moved, it can be reused provided the stainless-steel grab ring is replaced with a new one. To demount: unscrew the cap nut, pull the pipe out squarely, and use side cutters to cut and carefully peel the used grab ring from the pipe. Inspect pipe for damage before reusing.

Do you need to insulate plastic pipes and fittings like copper? +
Yes. Although polybutylene plastic pipe is more resistant to freezing than copper, it can still be affected by extreme cold. It is essential to insulate plastic pipes and fittings in accordance with building regulations.
Do PolyPlumb® Enhanced fittings require lubrication during installation? +
No. PolyPlumb® Enhanced fittings are pre-lubricated during manufacture. There is generally no need to add extra lubrication, however if you do need to, then you must ensure the lubricant used is approved for use with drinking water, such as Polypipe silicone lubricants; SG100 and SG300.
Is polybutylene plumbing suitable for hard water and soft water areas? +
Yes. PolyPlumb® Enhanced fittings and Pro-Straight® polybutylene pipe are ideal for all water conditions. Unlike copper, polybutylene naturally resists corrosion and scale build-up.
Can you use polybutylene barrier pipe with compression fittings? +
Yes, polybutylene pipe is compatible with standard compression fittings. You must use a pipe stiffener to support the pipe when making the joint. The stiffener can be plastic or metal, both work equally well with compression fittings. Copper olives are preferable to brass due to them being softer.
