This guide provides technical specifications and installation requirements for Polypipe Builiding Products inspection chambers and MCD1000 channel drains, specifically for driveway and domestic applications.

Which inspection chamber covers can be used on a driveway?

Driveways are classified as Group 2 installations under BS EN 124, meaning inspection chamber covers should be rated to Class B125

    Suitable B125 covers:

    For 450 & 460mm inspection chambers:

    • Round: UDC750
    • Square: UG513, UG520

    For 320mm inspection chambers:

    • Round: UDC700
    • Square: UDC702

All covers and frames installed in driveways must be bedded on a concrete surround measuring 300mm wide × 225mm deep, providing full support to the frame.

Use of UG510 and UG511 covers on private driveways

The UG510 and UG511 covers are rated to A35 (35kN) to BS ISO 15398. They are suitable for:

    • Private, single household driveways in locations not forming part of the public highway in areas subject to slowmoving, light vehicular traffic only

    Correct installation requires:

    • A 300mm wide × 225mm deep concrete surround
    • On slopes or turning areas, the concrete surround should extend upward to fully support the frame, and no tarmac should be laid over the concrete surround

⚠️ If the frame is not fully supported on concrete, the cover and frame will not perform as intended.

    Heavy vehicles and shared driveways

    • Delivery vehicles, refuse trucks, and construction traffic can exceed 35kN wheel loading
    • Wheel turning or braking can apply loads beyond the design capacity

    Recommendations:

    • Where heavy vehicles may access the drive, use a minimum B125 cover, correctly bedded on concrete
    • Shared driveways must not use UG510 or UG511
    • Shared driveways should use a minimum B125 cover, or a D400 cover (supplied by others) installed per manufacturer

    Securing frames to risers

Securing the frame to the riser is considered good practice and helps prevent loose covers and frames on site.

    Frame-to-riser fixing kits:

    • FRK500 – 460mm plastic frame to riser
      (For UG497, UG510, UG511)
    • FRK502 – 460mm ductile iron frame to riser
      (For UG419, UG513, UG520, UDC700, UDC702, UDC750)
    • FRK504 – 320mm plastic frame to riser / riser to riser
      (For UG501, UG502, UG439, UG499, UG436)

For the UG510, the frame spigot can be secured to the top side riser using stainless steel selftapping screws (minimum 10 × 1”) via the two moulded fixing holes.

Can the MCD1000 channel drain be used on a driveway?

The MCD1000 channel drain is CE and UKCA marked and classified as A15 (15kN) under BS EN 1433:2002, meaning it is primarily intended for pedestrian and cycle areas.

However, it has been independently tested to withstand a 50kN test load.

Suitable locations are areas where there is light vehicular traffic only and when correctly installed with full concrete surround installed strictly in line with Polypipe Building Products recommendations:

    • Domestic driveways (not driveway entrances)
    • Garage thresholds
    • Light vehicular traffic only

    Unsuitable locations

    • Entrances to car parks
    • Entrances to domestic drives adjacent to the road
    • Estate roads and shared access roads

Any areas accessible to heavy vehicles such as delivery vehicles, refuse lorries and building site trucks
In these areas, B125 or higher loadrated products should be used.

Which inspection chamber covers are sealed?

The following sealed covers are available and may be used internally:

    • UG551 (for UG550 – 200mm access chamber)
    • UG436, UG501, UG502 (320mm inspection chambers)
    • UG510 (450mm & 460mm inspection chambers)

Do you produce any doublesealed inspection chamber covers?

No. Polypipe Building Products does not produce doublesealed inspection chamber covers. Singlesealed covers are acceptable for internal use under the current Building Regulations.

Do you produce risers for the UG616 (750mm inspection chamber base)?

No risers are available for the UG616 750mm base. Concrete rings (supplied by others) should be used with this product.

How deep can inspection chambers be installed?

    • 320mm chambers – up to 0.6m
    • 460mm chambers – up to 1.0m
    • IC450 and IC600 chambers – up to 3.0m in adoptable applications

Any chamber installed deeper than 1.2m must incorporate a restricted access opening using:

    • UG510, UG520
    • or UG513 cover and UG514 restricted access reducer

What is the difference between standard BBA and IC450 / IC600 inspection chambers?

    • Standard BBA chambers – suitable for private or public drainage not being adopted
    • IC450 and IC600 chambers – suitable for:
      • Private drainage
      • Public drainage
      • Adoptable sewer applications

    These comply fully with:

    • Sewerage Sector Guidance (England)
    • Sewers for Scotland
    • Sewers for Adoption 7
    • Welsh Ministerial Standards
