Understanding Water Seal Depth

Under both working and test conditions, traps must retain a minimum water seal of 25mm. The depth of the water seal is defined as the vertical distance between the water level in the trap after discharge and the point at which the water would begin to allow foul air to pass through the trap.

Which trap should I use? +
That depends on the installation and the appliance being connected. In general, choose a trap that suits the waste outlet, the available space, and whether the trap will be visible or concealed.
Why does a trap need water in it? +
The water held in the trap creates a barrier between your home and the drainage system. If that water seal is lost, unpleasant smells can travel back up the pipework.
Why is there an unpleasant odour coming from my Trap? +
Traps that smell can often be caused by a "dry trap," where the water seal has evaporated due to the fixture being used infrequently. Running water for 30 seconds typically replenishes the seal. If odours persist, ensure the trap is correctly installed and that the water seal (typically 75mm for basins/sinks) remains intact, as required by Building Regulations.
Why is my trap draining slowly? +
Slow drainage is often caused by a partial blockage from soap residue, grease, hair, or debris. It can also happen if the waste pipe is restricted or the trap is not correctly aligned.
How do I clean a trap? +
Most traps can be cleaned by carefully disconnecting them, removing any soap residue, grease, hair or debris, and flushing them through with clean water. Always check that the trap is resealed properly before returning it to service.
How often should a trap be cleaned? +
There is no fixed rule, but regular maintenance helps prevent smells and blockages. A trap should be checked whenever drainage slows down or an odour becomes noticeable.
What should I do if the trap blocks repeatedly? +
Repeated blockages usually mean there is a buildup of soap residue, grease, hair or debris in the trap or a wider issue in the waste run. Cleaning the trap is the first step, but recurring problems may need a closer inspection of the pipework.
Can I use thread tape or sealant on trap connections +
No. Polypipe Building Products traps utilise compression joints that seal via high-quality washers. The use of thread tape or additional sealants is not required and may compromise the integrity of the plastic fittings.
Can I connect a washing machine to my sink trap? +
Yes, provided you select a trap model explicitly designed with an appliance nozzle. If the appliance nozzle is not in use, it must remain securely capped to maintain the integrity of the trap’s water seal and prevent the escape of foul air.
