Technical Specifications
Traps are an integral component of any waste system, situated on the appliance outlet to provide a water seal between the waste pipework and the internal environment. This seal is critical for preventing foul air from entering the building.
Installation Guidance: Expert Guides by Trap Type
Choose the installation guide below that matches your specific trap type. Each guide provides a comprehensive, step-by-step approach to ensure a secure, compliant, and leak-free installation.
Bottle Trap Installation
Key Step: Ensure the internal seal is correctly positioned before tightening the bowl to maintain a permanent, leak-free connection.
Tubular Trap Installation
Key Step: Check that the tube length is correctly adjusted to the waste outlet to prevent strain on the joint.
Bath Trap Installation
Key Step: Always utilise the blue Fit-Rite® insertion aid for helpful guidance in tight spaces.
Appliance Trap Installation
Key Step: Ensure the trap is installed with appropriate access for future maintenance.
Understanding Water Seal Depth
Under both working and test conditions, traps must retain a minimum water seal of 25mm. The depth of the water seal is defined as the vertical distance between the water level in the trap after discharge and the point at which the water would begin to allow foul air to pass through the trap.
Minimum Trap Sizes and Seal Depths by Appliance
The table below details the recommended minimum diameters and water seal depths as specified in Approved Document H (Section 1.6, Table 1)
| Appliance | Diameter of Trap (mm) | Depth of Water Seal (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| Wash Basin | 32 | 75 |
| Bidet | 32 | 75 |
| Bath | 40 | 50 |
| Shower | 40 | 50 |
| Sink | 40 | 75 |
| Washing Machine | 40 | 75 |
| Dishwasher | 40 | 75 |
| Waste Disposal Unit | 40 | 75 |
| Urinal Bowl | 40 | 75 |
Note: The diameters indicated refer to the nominal inside diameter of the waste pipework to which they are fitted. Where baths, showers, washing machines, and dishwashers discharge directly to a gully, the depth of seal may be reduced to 38mm.
