Tubular waste traps, including P traps, S traps, and adjustable pedestal traps, offer versatile installation options for waste pipework exiting through walls or floors. Because long waste pipe runs can create a vacuum that pulls water out of standard traps, understanding how to line up tubular fittings and prevent siphonage is key to maintaining healthy drainage systems.

Step 1: Inspect Alignment and Pipe Lengths

Determine if the waste pipe exits horizontally through a wall (requiring a P trap) or vertically into the floor (requiring an S or pedestal trap). If the waste pipe run exceeds 1.7 metres before reaching the soil stack, utilise an anti-syphon trap to protect the water seal.

Step 2: Connect Trap to Appliance Outlet

Position the trap inlet directly against the sink outlet, ensuring the seal rests entirely flat to guarantee a 100% airtight and watertight join. Screw the securing nut onto the outlet until there is no lateral play or movement.

Step 3: Adjust Telescopic Height (If Required)

For adjustable models, loosen the lower threaded nut beneath the inlet joint. Slide the trap body up or down to align with the waste pipe height, then retighten the nut to secure the internal seal.

Step 4: Sequence Waste Outlet Seals

Unscrew the outlet nut, blue finned seal, and blue spacer. Slide the nut (threads facing end), spacer, and blue finned seal (narrow end facing end) onto the waste pipe. Remove the blue Fit-Rite® insertion aid if joining to metal or non-kitemarked pipework.

Step 5: Secure Joint and Check Integrity

Push the waste pipe fully into the outlet, seat the blue seal inside the fitting, and thread the nut home. Hand-tighten and add a 1/4 turn. Perform a pull test to verify the joint, then run water to confirm leak-free performance.
