When designing and installing above-ground drainage, understanding how to correctly joint soil or waste pipe systems is essential for long-term performance and reliability. The two main jointing systems within our soil and waste ranges are: push-fit and solvent weld.

This technical guide details how to complete both jointing methods correctly, ensuring leak-free installations on site.

How to Make a Solvent Weld Soil or Waste Joint

Solvent welding creates a permanent, high-strength homogenous joint between the pipe and the fitting. Follow these steps for a secure joint:

    1. Clean the Surfaces:

Take some solvent cleaner and thoroughly clean the inside of the socket on the fitting, as well as the outside of the pipe.

    2. Apply Solvent Cement:

Take your solvent cement and apply it evenly to the inside of the fitting. Next, apply solvent cement all the way around the piece of pipe you want to joint.

    3. Push and Twist:

Carefully push both pieces together, then give the pipe a twist to ensure it is jointed correctly.

    4. Clean Up:

Carefully wipe away any excess solvent cement from the joint.

How to Make a Push-Fit Soil or Waste Joint

Push-fit systems offer flexibility and speed on site, allowing installers to adjust pipe runs easily.

    1. Lubricate the Seal:

Apply some lubricant and liberally apply it directly to the rubber seal inside the push-fit fitting.

    2. Prepare the Pipe:

Ensure you are using a piece of pipe with a clean chamfer on the end. This chamfer allows the pipe to be pushed straight into the push-fit fitting smoothly.

    3. Adjust and Align:

Once inserted, you can rotate the pipe to align the pipe run and any adjacent waste connections.

    4. Final Polish:

Wipe away any excess lubricant to ensure a clean finish.
