Frequently Asked Questions

Waste System Installation: Solving Connection & Compatibility Issues

Can you use solvent cement to join Polypropylene push-fit waste pipes? +
No. Push-fit waste pipes and fittings are manufactured from Polypropylene (PP), which does not react to solvent cement. To achieve a secure, leak-proof joint on Polypropylene, you must use push-fit fittings with rubber O-ring seals or universal compression fittings. Solvent weld cement is exclusively for use with ABS or MuPVC systems, where it creates a permanent chemical bond.
How do you connect different waste pipe systems (Push-fit to Solvent Weld)? +
To connect a push-fit waste pipe to a solvent weld pipe, you must use a Universal Compression Fitting. This is necessary because the outside diameter (OD) of the two systems differ; a 40mm solvent weld pipe has a larger OD than a 40mm push-fit pipe. A compression coupling provides a mechanical seal that accommodates both sizes securely, bridging the "Connectivity Gap" where glue or standard sockets would fail.
How do you allow for thermal expansion in a solvent weld waste run?  +
Because solvent weld systems create a rigid, permanent bond, they do not naturally absorb movement like push-fit O-ring joints. Expansion joints will be required where the pipe work length exceeds 2 metres.
What size waste pipe is required for different household appliances? +

To ensure correct flow rates and prevent blockages, standard UK sizing should be followed:

  • 32mm Pipe: Best for individual hand basins and small cloakroom appliances.
  • 40mm Pipe: The standard requirement for kitchen sinks, baths, and showers.
  • 50mm Pipe: Recommended for light commercial applications or where multiple appliances (such as a double sink and dishwasher) discharge into a single run.
What are the benefits of using a Fit-Rite® Universal Compression fitting?  +
Our Fit-Rite® technology is designed to simplify assembly in tight or awkward spaces, Fit-Rite® ensures a secure, square fit every time, significantly reducing the risk of future leaks. This highly adaptable range is designed for ultimate compatibility, working seamlessly with both solvent weld and push-fit waste sizes. Available in 32mm and 40mm diameters with a clean white finish, it is the go-to solution for a versatile and reliable plumbing connection.
