Soil and Vent Installation: Connectivity and Standards

How many toilets can be connected to a 110mm soil stack? +
In accordance with Approved Document H (Drainage and waste disposal), a 110mm primary ventilated soil stack serves up to 30 dwellings. A 110mm branch pipe typically serves up to 8 WCs at a minimum gradient of 1:110.
Why is it critical to chamfer the cut end of a soil pipe before insertion? +
When pipe is cut to length, the edge can be rough or square-edged. If not chamfered using a specialised file or rasp, the sharp edge may snag, displace, or slice the internal rubber seal during insertion. A properly chamfered end ensures the pipe slides smoothly into the socket without compromising the integrity of the seal.
What are the requirements for supporting a soil stack vertically? +
To prevent structural deflection and ensure long-term integrity, vertical soil stacks must be supported at the base of the stack and then by pipe brackets at maximum 1.8 metre intervals. In multi-storey installations, additional support is required at every floor level to manage the cumulative weight of the pipe and effluent.
Can I install a soil pipe horizontally? +
Yes, but strictly within the constraints of Approved Document H (Drainage and waste disposal). Horizontal pipework must be installed at a suitable gradient, typically 18mm per metre for 110mm pipe, to ensure self-cleansing velocity. Installing pipework completely level results in standing water and silt build-up, which increases the risk of blockages and adds unnecessary structural load to the brackets.
Can an Air Admittance Valve (AAV) replace a traditional vent? +
Yes. An AAV allows air into the system to equalise pressure and protect trap seals without requiring a hole in the roof. However, regulations usually require at least one open vent in the system at the head of the drain to allow for the escape of sewer gases. Up to 4 AAVs can be used before an open vent is required.
How do you connect modern plastic soil pipe to a legacy cast iron stack? +
Use our Universal Soil Adaptors (SP140). These feature a finned rubber seal that pushes directly into the cut end of a cast iron pipe, providing a modern 110mm push-fit socket for a gastight transition between legacy and modern materials.
Why is the Swept entry required in a soil branch? +
A swept entry, or curved inlet, guides the discharge into the vertical stack smoothly. This prevents cross-flow, where waste from one branch enters the opposite branch, and helps maintain the airflow required for pressure balance.
