PolyMax® vs. Copper Fittings: Key Benefits for Installers

While copper remains a traditional option, PolyMax® is engineered specifically to meet the handling and performance demands of modern residential plumbing. Our slimline push-fit fittings offer distinct advantages in installation speed, spatial efficiency, and system flexibility. Below is a comparison detailing how our system performs alongside traditional jointing methods.

Feature PolyMax® (Plastic) Traditional Copper Fittings
Connection Method One-step high-performance push-fit Requires soldering (heat/flame) or compression
Installation Speed Reduced assembly time compared to traditional methods with no hot works permits required. Standard handling times apply; requires cleaning, flux application, heating, and cooling time for soldered joints.
Demountability Tool-demountable for added security. Use the PolyMax® FitAid tools Can be demounted via spanner or wrench (compression), by cutting out the fitting (press-fit), or by applying heat to melt the solder (soldered).
Corrosion Resistance Inert polymer; doesn't react with minerals in the water to form scale build-up or corrosion. Susceptible to furring in hard water areas also pitting and corrosion due to aggressive water.
System Flexibility Reduces vibration and water hammer noise Rigid; can transmit noise and vibration
Pipe Delivery & Joint Frequency Available in continuous coiled lengths up to 150m. The material's flexibility allows it to be cabled through structural spaces, reducing the number of intermediate joints required across long runs. Supplied in rigid straight lengths (typically 3m). Navigating structural pathways or extending runs requires mechanical bending tools or the installation of intermediate fittings, which increases the overall joint frequency.

How to Install PolyMax® Fittings: 4 Simple Steps

Achieve a perfect, professional joint in seconds with PolyMax fittings. Follow these steps for a secure installation:

Cutting Polypipe Building Products White Pro-Straight Polybutylene Pipe

1. Cut

Use a professional pipe cutter to cut the pipe squarely at the 'K' mark.

ncerting the Pipe Stiffener into Polypipe Building Products Pro-Straight Polybutylene pipe

2. Insert Stiffener

Place a pipe stiffener into the cut end of the pipe.

3. Push

Push the pipe firmly into the fitting socket, fully through the internal sealing components until it reaches the pipe stop at the bottom of the socket.

Verify the pipe has been inserted properly by pulling back on the pipe and fittings

4. Verify

Pull back on the pipe to check that the collet has engaged securely.

Standard Sizes and Insertion Depths

Pipe Diameter Insertion Depth Compatible Pipe Types
10mm 25mm Polybutylene (PB) & Copper
15mm 35mm Polybutylene (PB) & Copper
22mm 42mm Polybutylene (PB) & Copper
28mm 44mm Polybutylene (PB) & Copper

Note: When using PolyMax® with copper pipe, ensure the pipe is deburred. Pipe stiffeners are only required when using Polybutylene (PB) pipe.

Material Compliance & Standards

PolyMax® is manufactured to the highest industry standards to ensure total reliability for residential housing and RMI projects. The system is fully compliant with:

  • BS 7291 Standards Logo BSI Kitemark

Frequently Asked Questions

PolyMax® Technical Support: Installation and Material Guide

Can you use PolyMax® fittings with copper pipe? +
Yes, PolyMax® is fully compatible with copper pipe. For a secure connection, ensure the copper is cut with a rotary cutter and deburred. Stiffeners are not required with copper pipe.
Pipe Diameter Insertion Depth Compatible Pipe Types
10mm 25mm Polybutylene (PB) & Copper
15mm 35mm Polybutylene (PB) & Copper
22mm 42mm Polybutylene (PB) & Copper
28mm 44mm Polybutylene (PB) & Copper
Is PolyMax® a demountable system? +
Yes. PolyMax® is a tool-demountable system. To remove a fitting, you must use the specialised PolyMax® demounting tool to release the gripping mechanism. This ensures the system remains secure and tamper-proof while allowing for professional adjustments.
Why use Polybutylene pipe? +
We choose Polybutylene (PB) to create the most flexible and efficient pipes and jointing systems available. Polybutylene pipe is ideal for both domestic hot and cold-water plumbing and heating systems, offering exceptional durability and long-term performance. The most important characteristic of polybutylene is its natural flexibility, allowing you to bend the pipe into even the tightest of spaces. Polybutylene is the most malleable plastic used in the manufacture of piping systems ensuring a lightweight and easy to handle pipe with good cabling ability for fast and easy installation. Polybutylene is also inert to scale build up in hard water areas.
What is a Polybutylene Barrier Pipe and why is it used? +
A barrier pipe is a specialised plumbing pipe featuring an internal oxygen barrier layer that is designed to prevent oxygen from entering the heating system, reducing the risk of corrosion in metal components, such as radiators etc.
Do PolyMax® fittings require lubrication during installation? +
No. PolyMax® fittings are pre-lubricated during manufacture. There is generally no need to add extra lubrication, however if you do need to, then you must ensure the lubricant used is approved for use with drinking water, such as Polypipe silicone lubricants; SG100 and SG300.
What is the standard pressure test protocol for PolyMax® systems? +
To ensure a secure installation, fill the system with water at ambient temperature and ensure all air is expelled. The pressure testing protocol is a two stage process:
  1. Low Pressure Test: Apply 1 bar of pressure for 30 minutes and inspect for leaks.
  2. High Pressure Test: Apply 18 bar of pressure for 30 minutes and inspect for leaks.
Do you need to insulate plastic pipes and fittings like copper? +
Yes. Although polybutylene plastic pipe is more resistant to freezing than copper, it can still be affected by extreme cold. It is essential to insulate plastic pipes and fittings in accordance with building regulations.
Is polybutylene plumbing suitable for hard water and soft water areas? +
Yes. PolyMax® fittings and Pro-Straight® polybutylene pipe are ideal for all water conditions. Unlike copper, polybutylene naturally resists corrosion and scale build -up.
Can you use polybutylene barrier pipe with compression fittings? +
Yes, polybutylene pipe is compatible with standard compression fittings. You must use a pipe stiffener to support the pipe when making the joint. The stiffener can be plastic or metal, both work equally well with compression fittings. Copper olives are preferable to brass due to them being softer.
